Rhiannon Johnson Fredericks
Lake Region State College
Rhiannon Johnson Fredericks – is an example of a student who overcame obstacles and difficulties to reach her goal. Along the way she changed directions and found new paths to success, with the help of her own hard work and determination and the support of TRIO personnel. In December, 2005, Rhiannon graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts. She then transferred to the Business Administration program at Mayville State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in 2008. Now Rhiannon uses her college degree as an employee of the Citizen’s Community Credit Union of Devils Lake. She is the manager of the Ft. Totten branch of the Credit Union and handles all transactions and accounting at the site. Below are the remarks that Rhiannon gave when she was awarded a TRIO Achiever award by TRIO/Student Support Services at Lake Region State College.
“I began attending college in the fall of 1997, when I was 19 years old. In the spring of 1997, my mother died. After that, I gave up my dream of college for seven years, until 2004, when I again registered for classes and joined the TRIO program. At first I wanted to pursue a career in nursing, but I changed my mind, and in December, 2005, I graduated with an Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts. I transferred to the Business Administration program at Mayville State University, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in 2008.
My teachers at Lake Region State College and Mayville State University were helpful when I needed help. TRIO was also a great help with my education. In TRIO, I got help with homework. Thanks to their laptop loan program, I was able to use a computer when I didn’t have one. They gave me encouragement to complete my goals in life, and they gave me support in my classes. If it weren’t for TRIO I would not be where I am today, and I would not have finished my four-year degree.”
