Jerome Billups was the third of five sons of a non-commissioned Air Force officer and his wife. He was born in Buffalo, NY. Following several moves during his childhood, he graduated from Manzano High School in Albuquerque, NM in 1974.
Billups retired from the Air Force in 2003 following 22 years of service. His job was managing people, programs and resources. Although he learned excellent job skills and creditable work experience, he found it was not enough when he began looking for work. He was either over- or under-qualified. After working for a large insurance and investment company, he determined that life in a small cubicle was not for him. He needed to get a degree.
A call to the Veterans Administration put him in contact with counselors who recommended he research VUB at Minot State University. The program helped him improve his study habits and academic studies. As an older-than-average student, VUB assisted with Billups’ adjustment to college life. They also provided networking and interaction with other veterans who shared similar life experiences and provided a support system. He had instant access to the people and resources he need to be successful.
In 2005, Billups transferred to NDSU and joined the VUB team there. At that time, he was not only a student, but making a lifestyle change that included raising a grandson. He is proud of the people and TRIO programs that have assisted him in obtaining his goals. Billups has continued working with other veterans going back to school and supporting other veterans in the VUB program by working as a VA Work Study
“When I graduate, I will give back the chance that was given to me,” he said. “I am thankful for the Student Support Services (SSS) support that I received through TRIO,” he continued, “ and the VUB program has been nothing but outstanding. The academic guidance counseling I received helped me better manage my time between my academics and providing for my grandchild. I am grateful.”
Billups graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management and has nearly completed his Master’s Degree in the same subject. He currently works as a Veteran Representative at Job Service in Fargo.
