South Dakota ASPIRE has been busy this week with our respective First Generation Celebrations! We wanted to share a few of our events so we could not only highlight our students’ successes but also provide our TRIO colleagues with some ideas to use in the future.
Dakota Wesleyan University: Their TRIO SSS program invited the entire campus to create posters of first generation students. These were then added to a board created the previous year. Posters were displayed in the Library lobby, along with a Pop Tart Buffet available for those passing by.
Black Hills State University: TRIO SSS celebrated current First-Generation students and First-Generation staff and faculty by sharing positive messages to other first-generation students. They also had a prize drawing for students that tagged themselves or another first-generation college student. In addition, they shared these videos on social media and on their webpage:ย https://www.bhsu.edu/…/Student…/Professional-Development
Northern State University: A first generation celebration marketing campaign consisted of a different first gen student spotlight each day on social media; a first gen snap chat giphy; First Gen Celebration stickers; a First Gen Celebration Zoom background; and decorating the Student Center windows with first gen student pictures/testimonials, quotes, and ads for the week’s events. They also hosted a First Gen Celebration Faculty & Alumni Panel, handed out candy with first gen facts at a tabling event, hosted a campus Game Night, and put on a community service event to make holiday cards for residents of an area nursing home.
